15 Affirmations to tell your kids

While we strive to create culturally and racially responsive environments, what seems an endless journey, there are a few things we can do to quickly respond to the impacts of all the -isms people experience. The hardest part is knowing where to begin.

“Start anywhere, follow it everywhere.”

- Donella Meadows, American environmental scientist

Start with what you have, what you can commit to and what creates instant satisfaction. As I always tell my kids “use your words”. You will always have them at your disposal. In your writing or art, verbally or even in sign language.

Try using affirmations to shift the narrative. Affirmations are positive statements that help us rewrite the stories we tell ourselves, fuel our dreams and challenge the impacts of our environment. They are simple, free and provide endless opportunities for us to support others. By practicing affirmations on a regular basis we can reprogram our subconscious increasing self-confidence and positivity.

Get started with these affirmations to build up your practice.

  1. I believe in you.

  2. You were right.

  3. You have great ideas.

  4. You make me proud.

  5. It’s good to be curious and ask questions.

  6. We can try it your way.

  7. You can say no.

  8. You have a right to express yourself.

  9. That was really brave.

  10. Don’t compare yourself to anyone. You are one of a kind.

  11. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing.

  12. You have a choice.

  13. I hear you.

  14. You are a king/queen.

  15. You can make a difference.

These are great phrases to keep in your pocket. Overtime you will develop your own gems to share with others and yourself. This work is tough and you can use some support too!
